WebSQL provides Internet access to major database engines such as Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. It is available at no charge to accredited academic institutions. Such institutions may access the system at http://www.websql.org or may contact Gove Allen to make arrangements for a free copy to be installed for local use.
Beyond allowing users to execute and see the results of SQL queries, the system hosts the databases from several popular textbooks including the following:
- Database Management and Design by Hansen and Hansen
- Modern Database Management by Hoffer, Prescott and McFadden
- Database Management Systems by Gerald Post
- Database Systems by Rob and Coronel
- Data Management by Richard Watson
Using this system, students can log in and execute the queries that are given as examples or homework in tier textbooks.
The system also has the capability to allow students to submit homework to their professors, and provides professors automated scoring for the correctness of students' queries written in response to homework questions. The system also allows students to create tables and insert data into them, grant permissions to other uses and create views. Students using this system as the main database interface for their database management instruction can build, populate and administer database with nothing more than a browser that is connected to the Internet. After the database structure is compiled, students can use an ODBC connection to their databases to build front-end applications using Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Java, PHP, and any other environment that supports ODBC connectivity.
